How many Demat accounts one can have in India?

You can have multiple demat accounts with multiple stock broker companies but, as demat accounts are opened using PAN details, one can only have one demat account with one stock broker company. It is safe to have multiple demat accounts for multiple investments, because a company itself cannot expect for any fraud or theft.
